US visa applicants to tender social media details
The United States of America has adopted a new rule that mandates nearly all applicants for the country’s visas to submit social media details.
In a report by BBC, the State Department regulations also requires applicants to submit five years’ worth of email addresses and phone numbers.
This removes all speculations from the idea that was proposed last year which is estimated to affect estimated 14.7 million people annually.
“We are constantly working to find mechanisms to improve our screening processes to protect US citizens, while supporting legitimate travel to the United State,” the department told BBC.
Previously, only applicants who needed additional vetting – such as people who had been to parts of the world controlled by terrorist groups – would need to hand over this data.

The Trump administration first proposed the rules in March 2018.
