Africacomicade, a platform that brings together enthusiasts and digital creatives across the games, animation, comics, and movie industry in Africa via curated events such as conventions and game jams, debuts virtually and it is very well received.
This highly anticipated event draws participants across Africa with facilitators from indigenous design studios in Africa and Europe. There has been keen interests around game development in the region in the past years and this event creates a community around the ecosystem of practitioners and consumers in the nascent industry in Africa.
The global games market generates $109 Billion in 2019 trumping the films and movie industry which grossed $100 Billion in the same period. This renewed focus on critical aspects of how to build the industry in Africa deserves keen attention considering its potentials for creating jobs particularly in the creative sector. In a recent study by Forbes, technology is discovered to be 36% of the top drivers of job creation for young people in Africa. Hence, the focus of Africacomicade on media technology is a move in the right direction.
The organisers aim to “…foster collaboration among digital creatives across Africa as well as celebrating the rich and amazing level of creativity possessed by Africans.” We hope that the gains of this conference will be harnessed to foster a virile community in the game design and development sector sector. The event which kicks off on Monday, April 24th ends on the 30th with a game jam.
